Spiritual Discipline
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. (Genesis 1:1, Genesis 2:1, Exodus 20:11, Nehemiah 9:6, Psalms 19:1)
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all peoples see his glory. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. For this is what the Lord says— he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited— he says: “I am the Lord, and there is no other. Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.” (Psalm 97:6, Psalm 103:11, Proverbs 3:19, Isaiah 40:26, Isaiah 45:18, Daniel 12:3, Hebrews 11:3, Revelation 14:7)
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. (John 3:16-18, Romans 1:20)
Scientific Discipline
The scientific discipline can be defined as a 7-fold systematic method to: make an observation, ask a question, form an hypothesis, make a prediction, test the prediction, analyze test data, form conclusions (modify hypothesis). The process is repeated as often as necessary until the hypothesis can be proved to be true, reliable, stable. Any test procedure has some degree of uncertainty (error) associated with it. The lower the uncertainty factor the more likely the hypothesis is true.
The scientific discipline does not produce 100% fact. However, it can get very close. It will always be precisely inaccurate by some error factor (close but no cigar). Generally speaking, the scientific discipline often results in a working model that closely approximates the observation or offers a possible answer to the question. It is not absolute, but it might be close.
The scientific discipline can enhance your understanding of how something should or could function.
Conclusions
Each discipline have differing context and focus. For Science to ignore the Spiritual and Spiritual to ignore the Science is an unfortunate mistake. The Spiritual discipline context is all about personal relationships with each other and the God who created our environment. Wisdom says each discipline has its rightful place. Problems always result when one discipline asserts itself over the other. It is more important to understand the ‘who’ and less important on the ‘how’. Take a long hard look all around you and you well see purpose, order and intelligent design in what was created or you will see the opposite impact upon creation when spiritual disciplines have been are ignored. I like and appreciate scientific discipline for what it is and what it is not. I also like and appreciate spiritual discipline for what it is and what it is not. But, if I had to choose one over the other, I would choose spiritual discipline simply because relationship with God and humanity is vastly more important than knowledge of how His creation works. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to point my telescope upward and explore the heavens the declaire the glory of God.
